Series 3 | Episode 156

[At the farm, Ellie sleeps as Alice enters holding a lamp. She checks to make sure Ellie is sleeping peacefully and leaves. In the dark of the night, she makes her way to Ned's grave and kneels beside it. Using the dirt of the grave, she marks her face with a dark streak]
[At the Mall, Jack has his bag packed and is leaving when he overhears a conversation in the cafe. Bray, Amber, Trudy, and Tai-San are having a hushed discussion. It's difficult to make out everthing they're saying]

Trudy:  So no one knows where she's gone.
Tai-San:  No.
Amber:  What about Luke?

[Jack listens for a second before continuing on out of the Mall]
[At Ned's grave, Alice sits quietly and gives one last look before getting to her knees and moving off with purpose]
[At the Hotel, Ebony is furtively transferring small objects between one bag and another. She takes one of the bags and puts it in a wall safe of some sort. She smiles wickedly as she picks up a candle and stares at the flame]

Ebony:  All, or nothing.
[In the Mall, the small group continues its secret meeting. They're discussing Ebony and a plan of action]

Bray:  But suppose what the Guardian says about Ebony is true? Okay. Do you want to live in a world where all the power is in the hands of someone who will stop at nothing to get her own way?
Trudy:  But we don't know that!
Bray:  That's why we gotta go through with this: to be sure. [Amber is holding her stomach and shifting around uncomfortably on her chair. Bray notices] You okay?
Amber:  Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine.
Tai-San:  You don't look fine.
Amber:  Stop it, both of you, I'm okay. Now look, the question is, will Ebony submit to an investigation?
Bray:  By refusing she'll prove that she's got something to hide. She can't afford to take that kind of risk.
Tai-San:  Well if were going to do something, we've got to do it now.
Bray:  So we're agreed? [He looks around the table and receives definite, if not enthusiastic, nods in agreement] Okay. I suggest we get some breakfast then go over and tell her. [He turns to Amber, who still looks like she's in a certain amount of discomfort] Do you need a hand?
[Amber doesn't seem to enjoy the extra attention her pregnancy is attracting and she snaps back at Bray]
Amber:  Did I ask for one?
[She walks off leaving Bray, Tai-San, and Trudy behind]
Bray:  Tai-San. I need to ask you, do you think Lex will support us?
[Tai-San shakes her head in the negative as Trudy looks on]
Tai-San:  I don't know.

[None of them are very happy about the choice they've made and Bray and Trudy exchange tired looks before going to join the others for breakfast]
[Meanwhile, Alice moves through the fields on the edge of the city with a purposeful stride. Jack is running after her trying to catch her attention. He calls her name]

Jack:  Alice! Alice!

[He makes another attempt to catch up with Alice. She's headed back into the city and Jack's just come from there. He stops to consider and ultimately decides to head the other way]
[May and Pride snuggle together inside the Mall. May has her head on Prides chest as they lie in bed]

May:  Your word, the truth. It matters to you, doesn't it?
Pride:  Of course.
May:  Well then what you said yesterday-
Pride:  May. You're home now, that's all that matters.
[That's not exactly what May wanted to hear and she sits up to look at Pride]
May:  No it isn't. Not to me. Did you mean what you said?
Pride:  I told you-
May:  Yeah, but did you mean it? Do you really love me?
Pride:  Of course I do. [This satisfies May and she lays her head back down to rest against Pride. When she's not watching his face, though, Pride doesn't look as sure of his declaration. He repeats his promise, but his expression is that of a man who knows he lies] Of course I do.

[Lex approaches the cage where the Guardian is being held. The two guards leave as Lex moves closer to talk to the prisoner]

Lex:  So, Mr. Power and Chaos. How does it feel to be completely and totally powerless? Little tingling around the neck? It's probably the hangman's noose that's coming your way.
[The Guardian turns to Lex, seemingly unbothered by both his situation and Lex's taunting]
Guardian:  You need me, to bear witness.
Lex:  Face it pal, you're over. Finished. Finito. So you say Ebony did something and she says she didn't. Who do you think they're going to believe?
Guardian:  Perhaps it's not their belief I want, perhaps it's their doubt. Do you have doubts Lex? Eating away at you like acid?
Lex:  We have no doubts.
Guardian:  Tell me, how is Tai-San?
[That certainly gets a reaction out of Lex. He isn't pleased to hear the crazy lunatic talking about his wife]
Lex:  Shut up!
Guardian:  You want to know if I ever slept with her?
Lex:  I said shut up!
[Lex throws his coffee cup at the cage and it shatters as the Guardian ducks the shards. When he stands again, he has a smug look on his face]
Guardian:  You see. Ebony will make a strong leader. The question is, if she's disgraced, will the city collapse into chaos? It's just her word against mine. I could tell you something Lex, just you. Shall I? After Ebony set me free, while I was waiting for Tai-San, I saw something. Do you want to know what it was? It was the future Lex.
[Despite his hatred, Lex is curious]
Lex:  What are you talking about?
Guardian:  What, you afraid to hear it? [Lex approaches the cage and puts his face next to the Guardian's] They're coming Lex: the true bringers of power and chaos. I've seen them; they're already here. And they're more powerful, and more deadly, than any of us. They will sweep you away, all of you! And not even Ebony can stop them!
[Lex looks consideringly for a moment, but then angrily brushes off the Guardian's words]
Lex:  I've told you, no one's going to believe a word you say!

[He leaves hurriedly]
[At the farm, Jack approaches the house and knocks. Ellie is still in bed and wakes at the sound. She wraps a blanket around her shoulders and goes to answer the door]

Jack:  Hey um, I just thought I'd come and say goodbye.
[Ellie motions him into the house]
Ellie:  So you're really leaving?
Jack:  Yeah.
Ellie:  Oh. [This news on top of everything else is difficult for her to handle and she breaks just a little] Oh.
[Jack gently pulls her into his arms]
Jack:  Come on then.

[Bray, Amber, and Tai-San arrive at the hotel to speak with Ebony. They find the place teeming with Ebony's guard and Mozzies. They are led before a deck by the pool and Ebony walks out to speak with them, Moz firmly at her back]
[Ellie, huddled in her blanket, is pouring out her heart to Jack. Unfortunately it's mostly about Luke, which has to be difficult for him to hear. He listens patiently, but the look on his face says he'd rather be somewhere else]

Ellie:  We could have made it work Jack! Ebony would have taken care of him! So would I. I loved him Jack, I still love him so much! [She finally realizes that this is probably not what Jack wants to hear] I shouldn't be telling you all this.
Jack:  Ellie, I- I know you love him. I had quite a while to work that one out.
Ellie:  Is that why you're going?
Jack:  I'm- I'm going because...a man has got to have adventures. And how about that? And who knows, I might even find someone out there like you.
Ellie:  You're still hurting, aren't you? And it's all my fault.
Jack:  Nah. [She gives him a look] Well maybe a little bit every now and then, you know?
Ellie:  you're a really sweat guy Jack.
Jack:  Yeah. [This doesn't seem to comfort him much] I'll tell you one thing; it gets a bit easier. In time.
Ellie:  Does it?
[He nods slightly, not really believing it either. Ellie has an unpleasant thought and looks away for a moment]
Jack:  What?
Ellie:  I was just thinking about Alice. She's in a really bad way; I've never seen her this cut up.
Jack:  Yeah she did look kind of, um...weird.
Ellie:  What do you mean?
Jack:  Oh I almost walked into her earlier.
Ellie:  You can't have!
Jack:  She was heading back to the Mall I guess. She was dressed up in some kind of uh...war paint.
Ellie:  War paint?

[KC walks up to Cloe, Andy, and Tally sitting dejectedly together outside the Mall]

KC:  Well, what have we got here? Snow White and the two dwarves. You three look like the sky's just fallen down. Know what you need? You need a little project to take your mind-.
Cloe:  Get lost KC.
KC:  What's up with you? Oh I know what it is. You're upset because I haven't been paying much attention to you lately. [She rolls her eyes] Well pucker up babe, because I'm about to give you some right now!
Cloe:  I'm depressed, not desperate!
Tally:  Ha ha!
KC:  So uh, can we get back to the original subject. You need something to focus your energies on, and I just happen-
Tally:  Forget it KC. Come on Andy.
[They walk off together, leaving Cloe with KC. He calls after the twins but they ignore him]
KC:  Wait! I'll pay you! In hard metal! What's up with them?
Cloe:  Ever thought they might be missing their big brother?
KC:  Yeah, I guess.
[He seems to realize his carelessness. Behind KC, Cloe spots Luke leaving the Mall and Alice approaching. Andy runs up to Alice]
Cloe:  Look.
Andy:  Alice! You've come to look after us!
Alice:  Sure Andy. Don't worry, everything'll be just fine.

[But she seems preoccupied with something other than Andy's worries. Cloe and KC watch Alice stride into the Mall, as does Luke. He's concerned and turns to run back up the stairs]
[At the hotel, the small group of Mallrats has relayed their intentions to Ebony. They sit in a room with Ebony and Moz and try to hash it out. Ebony has a worried expression on her face, but she's smiling and sarcastically cooperative with Bray]

Moz:  Are you serious? you're going to put Ebony on trial?
Bray:  No, its not a trial. It's a commission of enquiry and its purpose is to clear her name.
Amber:  You have to do it Ebony! For everyone's sake.
Moz:  No she doesn't! She doesn't have to do anything!
Tai-San:  So much anxiety Moz. One might even think you've something to hide.
Moz:  What are you trying to say?
Amber:  She's just trying to prove a point. Look, doubt leads to suspicion, leads to paranoia, leads to war. The only way we're going to build a future for this city is if we move forward on a basis of trust.
Ebony:  you're right. Well we can't have any doubts can we? So, are you going to handcuff me now, or is Lex gonna do that later?
Bray:  Well I just need to know if you're gonna cooperate.
Ebony:  Anything you say Bray.
Bray:  Great. Then I guess we'll see you later at the Mall.
[Bray grabs his coat and Amber and Tai-San stand to leave. They turn at Ebony's next words]
Ebony:  Oh, just one thing Bray. Do you have any doubts?
Bray:  Should I have?
[She smiles sickly and he leaves with one last look at her. Moz can see the danger, even if Ebony can't]
Moz:  You have to get rid of them Ebony. If you don't, I will.

[Lex plays his Gameboy outside the cage while Alice approaches]

Lex:  Hey there Alice! Man this GameBoy sure brings out the fire in you. Give it a go?
[She pulls back and lands a sucker punch right in his face. Lex is out for the count and Alice lowers his to the floor]
Alice:  Thanks Lex, maybe I will. In fact maybe I already have.
Guardian:  You've come! To reunite me with Zoot
Alice:  You bet I have!

[Ebony and Moz move into another room, upset about the conversation with the Mallrats]

Moz:  You can't go through with this!
Ebony:  You fool! In a few months, when I've consolidated my position, it won't matter what people think of me. But right now, they could pull me down like that! [She snaps her fingers] I have to be seen to be on the side of justice.
Moz:  Oh and what if justice finds you out, huh?
Ebony:  Oh I will be long gone before that ever happens. Besides the only evidence they have is the Guardian.
Moz:  I'm telling you Ebony!
Ebony:  Don't worry Moz, I won't tell them how helpful you've been to me. How I couldn't have been crowned queen without you.
[That shuts Moz up momentarily, and her next words are delivered in a much softer tone]
Moz:  You're risking too much.
Ebony:  Oh but then, life wouldn't be any fun without a bit of risk, would it? Maybe you should try it some time. But then again, you're not really a gambling woman, are you?
Moz:  Not when I don't like the odds!
Ebony:  Ah the odds are alright. All or nothing; I couldn't play it any other way.

[She leaves Moz alone to think about the situation Ebony's gotten them into]
[At the Mall, Alice is unlocking the cage to get to the Guardian. But his eagerness for death is complicating the simple revenge she's seeking]

Guardian:  The only one with enough courage to present me with the ultimate gift.
[She reaches him and slams him violently back against the wall of the cage]
Alice:  This is not a gift! It's revenge!
[She throws him across the cage to the other wall and presses his face against the metal. The Guardian isn't fazed by this and continues to goad her]
Guardian:  Do you miss him Alice?
Alice:  You took him away from me!
[Luke has approached without the Guardian or Alice noticing. He tries to talk Alice out of committing murder]
Luke:  He's not worth it Alice.
[Putting her arm across the Guardian's neck and dragging him in front of her like a shield, Alice turns towards Luke]
Alice:  I'm doing this for Ned!
Luke:  If he dies you'll be reigniting the fire of power and chaos all over again!
Alice:  No! No!

[Luke is slowly trying to approach Alice but she's hysterical]
[Ellie and Jack come running into the Mall searching for Alice. They question KC about her but don't stop to hear his response]

Ellie:  KC, have you seen Alice?
KC:  Uh yeah, she-
Ellie:  Come on!

[Luke continues to try to talk Alice down and he seems to be getting through to her]

Luke:  Think about it Alice.
Alice:  He'll- he'll be made into a martyr, won't he?
Luke:  If you want revenge, let him live with his pain.
[Alice realizes the truth of Lukes words. She doesn't want to, but she lets the Guardian go. Screaming, she pushes him away and collapses against the cage. Luke goes to comfort her]
Alice:  No!
Luke:  Alice! It's alright. Let's go. Let's go.
[The Guardian moves up behind Luke and grabs his shoulder painfully]
Guardian:  Thank you for saving my life Lieutenant!

[Somewhere, a plane flies through the sky. But who has the knowledge to not only get the plane up in the air but to fly it as well? Could the adults be back?]
[In the Mall, Bray, Amber, and Tai-San return from their meeting with Ebony. They immediately pass along the news of Ebony's decision, but there are other things to worry about now. The Mallrats are gathered at the bottom of the stairs. Lex is standing in front and holding his head]

Bray:  Listen up everybody! Ebony's agreed to cooperate. It's okay.
Lex:  No it isn't.
Tai-San:  What is it?
Lex:  It's Alice.

[Ellie sits in the cage with Alice trying to comfort her, but Alice is distraught. She cries and mumbles confusedly while Bray, Lex, and Tai-San try to figure out what happened to the Guardian]

Alice:  I had to bury him. In the cold. I buried him.
[The others watch her for a minute before Bray bends down and speaks to her gently]
Bray:  Alice. Where is he?
Alice:  Hell.
Bray:  You wasted the Guardian?
Alice:  It's over now! It's- it's all over now!
Bray:  Who told her it was the Guardian?
Ellie:  I did.
Bray:  Why Ellie?
[Trudy interrupts them to deliver some unwelcome news]
Trudy:  Bray, Ebony's outside the gates with some of her people. She's heard the news. It was Andy, I couldn't stop him.
Bray:  Um, yeah okay. Okay I'm coming. Lex arrest her.
[He points at Alice. Lex is shocked]
Lex:  What?

[Bray and Tai-San heads off to speak with Ebony but Amber stops him as she comes down the stairs]

Amber:  Bray. I'm coming with you okay?
[Ellie comes running over to Bray]
Ellie:  Bray! I only told Alice that the Guardian wasted Ned because Ebony told me too. She said it would help.
[Bray sighs and hurries outside. Amber can see that Ebony's intentions probably weren't pure]
Amber:  Yeah, I bet she did.

[Amber and Tai-San follow Bray outside]
[Meanwhile, someone is at the controls of the plane and knows what they're doing]
[Amber and Bray stand at the balcony overlooking a crowd. Ebony, with Moz at her back, is at its head and is demanding answers to the Guardian's fate. Bray is trying to be calm and get her away from the crowd, but the audience is really what Ebony wants. She tries to stir them up]

Ebony:  Let's hear it Bray, is he with Zoot?
Bray:  Why don't you come inside Ebony.
Ebony:  You hear that? The Guardian is no more!
[The crowd cheers and then begins to chant Ebony's name]
Crowd:  Yeah! Ebony! Ebony!
Ebony:  Hey Lex, you got Alice in there? So let's see the heroine who finally had the guts to destroy the Guardian!
[Like sheep, the crowd begins to chant Alice's name]
Crowd:  Alice! Alice! Alice! Alice! Alice! Alice!
[Bray moves down the stairs and interrupts with a very important question]
Bray:  Hang on! Hang on! Ebony, how did you know it was Alice who got him?
[Ebony doesn't deign to reply and it's quickly becoming apparent that she engineered the whole thing. Unfortunately, it's not apparent to the crowd of riled up kids and they are firmly on Ebony's side]
Ebony:  I suggest you get her Bray, before they turn nasty.
Bray:  Is that what you want? Huh? A world ruled by the mob?
Ebony:  You got it. You put Alice on trial and they'll lynch you. She's a heroine and I am pardoning her, as from now.
Bray:  You planned this all, didn't you?
Ebony:  You don't have a shred of evidence.
[Amber joins Bray and stands at his side]
Amber:  Yeah, well you made sure of that, didn't you?
Ebony:  Arrest them. I said arrest them! [Two guards move up and grab their arms] These two are banished. They're not to come back to this city ever! On pain of death! And anybody who helps them will get the same!
[Pride comes up behind Amber and Bray and makes to challenge Ebony]
Pride:  I won't let you do this Ebony!
Amber:  No Pride don't! Or there'll be a blood bath!
Ebony:  Well?

[Ebony cocks her head and waits to see what Bray will do. He moves closer to Amber and puts his arm around her shoulders. Shortly thereafter, they are moving through the crowd, which yells insults and throws things at them. They huddle together, following Lex who, to his credit, tries to push the crowd off them. In the crowd, Moz smirks at their fate]
[The Guardian has tied Luke's hands together and is leading him away from the center of the city and to the water. Luke stumbles along behind him, confused]

Luke:  What's going on?
Guardian:  The Chosen still have followers who believe!
Luke:  Guardian, tell me! Please! What's this all about?
Guardian:  Faith Luke!

[Lex has led Amber and Bray past the railyard and to the outskirts of the city. He obviously feels bad about what he's been asked to do, but he makes no effort to stop Amber and Bray's banishment]

Lex: Well I guess this is it then. Um, this isn't much. It's just a bit of food, and some money.
[Bray takes the bag with the food in it but neither he nor Amber reach for the small bundle of money in Lex's hands]
Amber:  It doesn't have any value Lex. Not outside the city.
Lex:  Yeah I guess. Well no hard feelings eh?
Bray:  You could help us to bring her down.
Lex:  No Bray. My outlaw days are over.
Amber:  Right. I mean after all you're headed for big things with her, aren't you? King pin in the corrupt city. Right up your alley, huh?
[Amber is understandably bitter, and perhaps just a little scared about what this means for her, Bray, and their baby. Lex doesn't have much sympathy for her when she's pointing out his shortcomings though]
Lex:  You know maybe, maybe a baby and some country living will soften your tongue up! [Bray pulls Amber close and they stand quietly. Lex too softens a little] I hope you both make it. I really do. See you around.
[Bray doesn't reach out to return the handshake Lex offers]
Bray:  You will.

[Lex watches the exiles as they move away from the city. He looks momentarily at the bundle of money and sighs]
[The Guardian and Luke have made their way down the shore and finally stop at a dock. Luke is shocked to see a member of the Chosen, dressed in the blue robes that have been missing from the city for some time]

Chosen:  Your excellency, I never thought I'd see the day.
[The Guardian undoes the robes around Luke's hands]
Guardian:  You're free Luke. Free to go.
Luke:  Free! But-
Guardian:  You may join us if you wish.
Luke:  Where are you going?
Guardian:  A safe house, for all the believers.

[Bray and Amber continue to walk with no destination. A man and woman without a country. Amber stumbles suddenly and as Bray helps her to her feet she begins to feel pains]

Amber:  Bray!
Bray:  What? What, has it started?
Amber:  It can't have!
[But it seems the labor has started. Amber holds her stomach and groans with the pain. Bray sees a barn and points it out]
Bray:  There. There.
[Bray takes some of Amber's weight on himself and leads her towards the barn and shelter]
[Meanwhile the Guardian is giving Luke the same old Chosen party line]

Guardian:  You still believe, don't you Luke? I can see the spirit of Zoot in your eyes. He is with you, forever! You're one of us Luke, you always will be!

[Luke rubs his neck and doesn't say anything]
[In the hotel, Ebony is celebrating her successful expulsion of her biggest enemies with a nice glass of red wine. Her gloating is interrupted, however, by the last sound she expects to hear: the sound of a plane flying overhead]
[Bray flings open the door to the barn and leads Amber inside]

Bray:  Here! Here! [He lays her down on the hay covering the floor] Its okay Amber! Its okay, Amber! It's okay. I'm here, okay. I'm here!
[She's in pain and is terrified. She cries and Bray tries to calm her down]
Amber:  Bray! It can't be the baby, Bray! It can't be! It's too soon!
Bray:  Shh, Just relax! Listen! Relax. I've done this before, remember!

[She groans in pain]
[The Guardian is standing on the dock, ready to depart in the waiting boat. He offers Luke one more chance to go with him]

Guardian:  Coming?
[Whether Luke was considering going or not, they are interrupted by the sound of a plane flying overhead. They look up, Luke in shock and the Guardian with no surprise]
Luke:  Who?
Guardian:  The true bringers of chaos, they're here.

[The Guardian says this quietly and sanely, which only makes it that much more alarming]
[A man and a boy out tending a flock of sheep also see the plane in the sky. They point and turn to each other wondering who it is and what it means]
[The rest of the Mallrats are all gathered in the cafe, talking in small groups. KC is the first to hear the plane and he waves the others to silence]

KC:  Shh! Shh! Listen!
[We get the first glimse of the pilots of the plane and their faces are obscured by strange silver masks]
[KC moves around the cafe in the Mall, while all of the Mallrats look to the ceiling and the direction of the unfamiliar sounds of a plane in the sky once more]

KC:  It sounds like a plane!
Trudy:  It can't be!

[The hatch at the rear of the plane begins to open]
[In the barn, Amber is deep into Labor. Bray is tending to her when he too hears the plane. He moves to an opening in the ceiling of the barn to see the plane pass overhead. Amber's cries pull him back to the situation at hand and he hurries back to her]

Bray:  Amber!

[Inside the plane, people move towards the open hatch]
[Amber's labor is not going well. She is in pain and almost delierious. Bray puts his hand between her legs and comes away with blood on his fingers. He makes a fist]
[Half a dozen people, their faces concealed by silver masks, jump from the plane]

Techno:  Now!
[Amber's cries continue as parachutes are spotted in the skies. The strangers strip jumpsuits off, revealing black uniforms with silver embellishments across the chest and elsewhere. They roll up their parachutes quickly and run off as the plane, or planes, make another turn. One of them kneels down and grabs the microphone build into the mask]

Technos:  Base One. Operation Cognitive. The Invasion Forces have landed.
